The Joint Commission on Healthcare Quality (JCAHO) surveys over 17,000 healthcare organizations, including Calvert Memorial Hospital. The purpose of the survey is to measure our compliance with JCAHO standards designed to improve the quality and safety of the services we provide.

CMH Nurses Receive Top Honors

Calvert Memorial Hospital nurses Karen Seekford and Rose Essex received top honors at the Maryland Nursing Association's District 9 annual awards ceremony on May 8th in Waldorf. Seekford won the Jo Anne Zwick Caring Award and Essex was named Nurse of the Year.

Seekford has been a registered nurse on Level 2 for 22 years. "Karen is an excellent nurse," says Anne Lockhart, director of the medical-surgical, intensive care and telemetry units. "Greatly respected by her peers, she has become the 'gold standard.' She has achieved this not by what she says but rather by what she does. Her nursing care is exemplary. She has the energy of a novice nurse and the calm wisdom of the veteran nurse. Time at the bedside is Karen's mantra; it is why she is a nurse."

Essex has been a diabetic educator at CMH for the last five years. "Rose is dedicated to empowering her patients," says Lockhart. "Her patients sense her unique communication skills. She has a deep understanding of the emotional turmoil that surrounds the newly diagnosed and guides them until they can absorb the tools they need for their own self-management. Her success lies in her patients' results."
