100,000 Lives Campaign
Calvert Memorial Hospital is proud to participate in the national 100,000 Lives Campaign, aimed at reducing medical errors in hospitals. We have implemented all 6 of the safety goals recommended under the campaign.

  • Deploy Rapid Response Teams... at the first sign of patient decline. Our team includes an experienced ICU nurse and respiratory therapist to help with assessment and intervention.
  • Deliver Reliable, Evidence-Based Care for Acute Myocardial Infarction (heart attack)... to prevent deaths from heart attack. Since 2004, CMH has closely tracked how well staff administer certain medications that have proven to improve patient outcomes and reduce the risk of another heart attack.
  • Prevent Surgical Site Infections... by putting into place specific measures that have proven to reduce the risk. Out current surgical site infection rate is less than half a percent.
  • Prevent Central Line Infections... by using evidence-based "best practice." Our central line infection rate is 0.4 percent compared to the national average of 3.1 percent.
  • Prevent Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia... by reducing their use. CMH has a 0 percent ventilator-associated pneumonia rate.
  • Prevent Adverse Drug Events (ADEs)... by implementing medication reconciliation. Computerized systems at CMH will allow the hospital to match up each patient’s medication orders with the medications he/she has been taking. CMH currently ranks second in the state for medication safety, according to a recent survey of 46 Maryland hospitals.

Patient Safety Report
Health Outcome Measures: Improving health outcomes in patients with a heart attack, heart failure or pneumonia.

Three basic strategies result in better outcomes:

Communicate the purpose of the Health Outcomes quality initiative to CMH Medical Staff & other healthcare professionals.
The purpose of Health Outcome Measures (also known as Core Measures) is to evaluate patient care related to best practice standards and improve patient outcomes. Continuing education provided on current medical practice.

Incorporate best practices & system changes!
Incorporate best practices into development of patient care Order Sets. Implement computerized medical record system changes to support best practices.

Provide timely feedback & education!
Provide timely feedback & ongoing education for individual practitioners/ staff. Compare our performance with BEST hospitals, not national averages. Don't aim for average!
