The tumor registry guided by the Commission on Cancer registers all patients diagnosed or treated with cancer at Calvert Memorial Hospital and maintains an accurate account of their healthcare experience. During 2001, 281 analytic and 17 non-analytic cases were added to the registry. This represents a 12 percent increase in analytical cases from 2000. The registry maintains data on cancer patients diagnosed since January 1, 1989 and has a database of 2,805 cases. Follow-up is done for every patient diagnosed with cancer on an annual basis with a consistent 90% follow-up rate.

The tumor registry held a total of four Committee Meetings and 13 Cancer Conferences in 2002. Thirty cases were presented at the Cancer Conferences with 24 (80%) prospective and 8 (20%) retrospective. The presentation of cases at Cancer Conference allows for interdisciplinary medical consultation and continued provider education. Registry data is submitted to the Maryland Cancer Registry on a quarterly basis and to the National Cancer Data Base yearly, as requested.

Breast, colorectal, lung and prostate cancer have been listed as the most common cancer sites since the registry began. We have seen an increase in breast (by 8 cases), lung (by 7 cases) and prostate (by 4 cases) cancer at Calvert Memorial Hospital in the past year. Colorectal cancer has declined (by 9 cases) and cervical cancer cases remain unchanged. Due to the consistent nature of the prevalence of these cancers, these sites are the focus of many hospital programs and services.

During the past year, the Colorectal Cancer Program increased its focus on community education, fecal occult blood testing for at-risk populations and screening colonoscopies. Woman's Wellness also increased its services while continuing to provide well-woman exams, for cervical cancer, and mammograms. Community Wellness provides prostate screening as well as tobacco education and cessation programs. These three programs contribute to the early detection of cancer, which is one of the most important factors in determining long-term survival.
