The theme for
this year's Community Cancer Report is "Living with Cancer
- Day by Day." Every day brings new challenges when you're
living with cancer. Now, at Calvert Memorial Hospital you have an
advocate to guide you through the treatment process and a toll-free
help line to call when you have questions.
At Calvert
Memorial Hospital, we know we're not just treating cancer; we're
taking care of someone special to you. Our Cancer Care Coordinator,
Mary Emma Middleton, works closely with patients and families to
coordinate all aspects of care. She is a nurse practitioner with
national certifications in oncology and hospice/palliative care
nursing.
And when you
need answers - call 1-877-CMH-CANCER (264-2262). Ms. Middleton can
be a valuable resource. She can put you in touch with cancer-related
services and talk with other healthcare providers for you.
The
cover illustration of our Annual Report is important because it
reminds us that the cancer program at CMH allows patients to stay
close to home, work and family while receiving treatment. At the
same time, our patients can feel confident about the quality of
our multi-disciplinary approach to care. In fact, the Commission
on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons recognized our oncology
program in 2001 as offering the very best in cancer care.
A key aspect
of our program is the focus on public awareness, especially the
importance of cancer prevention and early detection. Throughout
the past year, CMH offered wellness programs, which attracted 11,328
participants. We also provided free prostate screenings for 116
men and distributed free colorectal kits to another 336 persons.
Some 292 women received free care through Woman's Wellness and we
reached more than 1,100 local youth with our "Tobacco Road
Show," a 40-minute interactive demonstration that targets teen
smoking.
Looking ahead,
we're pleased to announce that another oncologist will soon be joining
our program. Additionally, we will continue to work with our partners
on the Calvert County Cancer Coalition to enhance and expand services
to all county residents.
This report
provides an overview of our cancer program, including related services,
support groups and sources for additional information. The Question
and Answer Section by Dr. Kenneth Abbott addresses commonly asked
question about lymphoma. It describes symptoms, diagnosis, treatment,
as well as possible causes and prevention.
We encourage
you to read the information contained in this report and hope you
find it useful. Should you have any questions about the program,
please direct them to our tumor registry at 410-535-8273 or 301-855-1012,
ext. 8273.
