Calvert Memorial began as a two-story, frame building in 1919. Over time, as the county grew, so did the hospital - upgrading technology, improving facilities and expanding services. From its humble beginnings, CMH has transformed into Southern Maryland's premier healthcare provider.

Today, Calvert Memorial is poised to complete the largest expansion in the hospital's history. One fourth (71,767 square feet) of the hospital will be new or rebuilt. The $33 million project includes a greatly expanded Emergency Department, a new 10-bed Critical Care Unit, 16 additional acute care beds and nearly 400 more parking spaces. It also features a concourse dedicated to outpatient services.

To fund the project, the hospital is selling bonds at favorable rates and continuing its capital campaign to raise a total of $3 million from the community to purchase much-needed equipment.

A lot has changed since Calvert Memorial first opened its doors. There were about 10,800 people living in the county then. Now, some 80,000 call Calvert their home. And that growth is expected to continue. A total of 179 patients were cared for in the hospital in 1920 - now we serve about 300 patients every day.

There have been other changes, too. The medical staff has grown to 226, offering more than 37 specialties. The hospital is now the county's second largest employer - with 975 employees. It has satellites in Dunkirk, Solomons and North Beach and the main campus in Prince Frederick includes a medical office building and a childcare center.

Despite this growth, Calvert Memorial still remains one of the lowest cost hospitals in the state (4th out of 47), saving millions of dollars for area residents. Last year alone, it provided almost $4 million in care to those without insurance or unable to pay their bills.

CMH is also widely respected as a leader of innovative medicine and recently garnered two prestigious awards for quality care. These honors were significant because they compared Calvert's clinical outcomes to national benchmarks. They also underscore the hospital's ongoing commitment to provide the highest quality care for its patients.
