Every day, hundreds of patients and visitors come to the Calvert Memorial Hospital campus for outpatient services - from cardiac rehabilitation to chemotherapy. Often times, they're not feeling well and find it difficult to walk long distances.
The Outpatient Concourse, which opened this February, will address many of the current problems. Located on the first floor, the concourse will eventually connect the hospital's two major entrances - from the main lobby to the Emergency Department waiting area and overlook a healing garden.
The new layout provides several advantages, according to Barbara Polak, director, ambulatory care services at CMH. "The public will find it much easier to reach the outpatient services that will be concentrated in this area," she said. "It is simple to locate and within a short walking distance of nearby parking."
Polak added, "Separating the public and outpatient traffic flow from the inpatient, staff and service traffic in the hospital enhances privacy and confidentiality."
This area, which includes 13,466 square feet, will also enable the hospital to add several new features, she said, including a Cancer Resource Library, a Pain Center and a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. The CMH Infusion Therapy Center and the hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation program will also be located here.

The Cancer Resource Library will provide patient education and resource materials, selected cancer-related books, a TV/VCR for viewing videos of interest and a computer with links to other cancer sites.
The Pain Center will offer comprehensive pain management for patients with acute injuries and chronic conditions. A wide variety of treatment options will be available on the CMH campus including medication, physical therapy, chiropractic services and integrative therapies such as acupuncture and massage.
Patients with breathing disorders will benefit from Pulmonary Rehabilitation. The program teaches breathing and relaxation techniques, proper nutrition and how to prevent infection. It will also include monitored exercise to help them build endurance.
Our CMH Infusion Therapy Center combines warm personalized care with the latest technology. The unit includes eight stations, each with its own recliner and side tray, TV, ceiling light for reading and piped-in music. A separate blood draw room is offered onsite and a private area is provided for consulting with a dietitian, social worker or the Cancer Care Coordinator.
To help patients improve heart conditions, modify risk factors or recover from a heart attack, our 12 week Cardiac Rehabilitation program focuses on monitored exercise, education and counseling.
