CMH Foundation awards scholarships
The Calvert Memorial Hospital Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling $18,600 to 25 area college students for studies in allied health fields for the 2005 – 2006 academic year. They are pursuing degrees in nursing, physical therapy, nuclear medicine and radiography.

“These scholarships are an effective way to meet the increasing demand for qualified healthcare professionals in our community,” said Jim Xinis, President and CEO of Calvert Memorial Hospital.

Thirteen are enrolled in the nursing program at the College of Southern Maryland. They are Jason Barr of North Beach, Debra Barton, Virginia Rivenbark, Ginette Slankard and Jackson Brown of Lusby, Christina Bowie of St. Leonard, Donna Carpenter, Margaret Fowler and Tina Green of Huntingtown, Sharon Hutchins of Prince Frederick, Lisa Pumphrey of Chesapeake Beach and Ann Tucker and Tasha Zochert of Owings.

Six nursing students attend area colleges. Emily Blankinship of West River attends the University of Delaware, Rachel Catrambone of Huntingtown and Sarah Forsyth of Solomons attend the University of Maryland Baltimore, Christina Duelley of Chesapeake Beach attends Towson University, Heather Holley of Owings attends Catholic University and Sonja Pitrof of Huntingtown attends Johns Hopkins.

Three are pursuing degrees in physical therapy. Nicholas Destefano of Chesapeake Beach is attending College Misericordia and Katherine Wells of Prince Frederick is attending Shenandoah University. Carli Henson of Owings is obtaining her doctorate at Duquesne University.

Jennifer Mohler of Huntingtown is training to become a physician’s assistant at George Washington University. Carolynn Fleenor of Mechanicsville is pursuing a radiography degree at Stanford Brown University and Samantha Cobaugh of Port Republic is pursuing a degree in nuclear medicine at York College of Pennsylvania.

Since the scholarship program began in 1991, the foundation has given 153 scholarships totaling $194,500 to area students. The scholarship fund was created by an endowment from the Calvert-Arundel Medical Center. Applicants from Calvert and Anne Arundel counties receive preference during selection.
