CMH employees give time, money to hurricane relief effort
Calvert Memorial Hospital employees have already raised over $11,000 to help their counterparts at Slidell Memorial Hospital located in one of the hardest hit parts of Louisiana. Some 80 CMH staff members have also volunteered to go to the affected area to provide medical assistance.
"The response from our employees has been overwhelming," said Bob McWhirt, vice president for nursing at Calvert Memorial Hospital. "Their generosity and willingness to respond has far exceeded our expectations."
Earlier this month, McWhirt said Calvert Memorial Hospital submitted a list to the Maryland Department of Health and Human Services of 80 employees who had offered to serve two-week stints in federal emergency medical shelters or area hospitals. He said the list includes physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, as well as housekeeping, dietary and security staff.
"The state is assembling a list of who needs help and where it is needed and then they will make assignments," he explained.
McWhirt said two CMH nurses were among the first to respond and have already arrived in Louisiana. Barbara Perry, a radiology nurse, has helped to establish two clinics in Jefferson Parrish that are giving vaccines and providing minor care to patients. Christine Kelly, a medical-surgical nurse, volunteered through her church to provide food and shelter relief.
Additionally, CMH employees have stepped forward with financial assistance. They have made cash donations and converted their vacation time in order to help Slidell Memorial Hospital. Calvert adopted Slidell as part of a program initiated by the Voluntary Hospital Association. Both are members of VHA.
"Slidell was significantly impacted by the hurricane," said CMH President and CEO Jim Xinis. "We've been informed that the majority of the hospital staff have lost their homes, personal belongings and experienced tragic circumstances within their own families."
"We are committed to supporting the needs of their hospital staff," he added, "to begin the process of healing and rebuilding."
Recently, a bake sale organized by Patty Valencis, RN and Patti Ritter, RN brought in over $600. Other fundraising activities are planned in the coming weeks to assist this effort. |
