CMH surgeon named AOAO vice-president
Dr. Debra Spatz, orthopedic surgeon at Calvert Memorial Hospital, was recently named 1st vice president of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (AOAO). In September, she will become the first female to serve as president in the organization’s 65-year history.
The role of the 1,000-member professional association is to promote the specialty of orthopedics through research and study. They also sponsor residency training programs to foster the development of younger physicians.
“We are pleased to congratulate Dr. Spatz on her appointment,” said CMH President and CEO Jim Xinis. “She is a valued member of our orthopedic surgical team. Her support and expertise have contributed to our high standards and continued excellence in quality patient care.”
Spatz joined the active medical staff at CMH in 1993. Rozran and Spatz Orthopedics has offices in Prince Frederick and at the Solomons Medical Center, a satellite of CMH. She is board certified in orthopedics and specializes in pediatric orthopedic surgery and sports medicine.
Currently, she is a member of the hospital’s Medication Safety Task Force, whose mission is to develop and implement practices throughout Calvert Memorial to promote medication safety.
Spatz is also medical director of the Pediatric Orthopedic Clinic at CMH. The specialty clinic provides evaluation and assessment of children with severe orthopedic problems. In 2001, she was recognized with the hospital’s prestigious community service award for her work in this area.
