CMH Foundation awards scholarships

The Calvert Memorial Hospital Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling $20,400 to 21 area college students for studies in allied health fields for the 2006 – 2007 academic year. They are pursuing degrees in nursing, physical therapy, nuclear medicine, radiography and sonography.

Additionally, the foundation awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Jennifer Mohler of Huntingtown who is training to become a physicians assistant at George Washington University. The Sharon’s Way Benevolent Fund established the new scholarship earlier this year.

“These scholarships are an effective way to meet the increasing demand for qualified healthcare professionals in our community,” said Jim Xinis, President and CEO of Calvert Memorial Hospital.

Since the scholarship program began in 1991, the foundation has given 175 scholarships totaling $216,500 to area students. The scholarship fund was created by an endowment from the Calvert-Arundel Medical Center. Donations to the CMH annual appeal can also be designated for scholarships.

Fourteen scholarships were given to nursing students. Four of the receipts attend the College of Southern Maryland. They are Steven Colvin of Lusby, Patricia Rowe of Prince Frederick, Ruth Shenberger of St. Leonard and Lisa Bennett of Bryan’s Road.

Ten nursing students attend area colleges. Laura Meekins of Lothian attends Johns Hopkins. Jackson Brown of Lusby attends Barton College. Rachel Catrambone of Huntingtown and Lindsay Slavin of Owings attend the University of Maryland. Heather Holley of Owings attends Catholic University. Jessica Juckett of Owings attends Villa Julie College. Kristi McClanahan of Hughesville attends Liberty University. Shelby Parrish of Owings and Heather Ruest of Huntingtown attend Salisbury University. Leotha Taylor-Mims of Waldorf attends Howard University.

Three students are enrolled in a physical therapy program. Adam Dymond of Huntingtown attends Mount St. Mary’s, Shawn ONell of Tracys Landing attends the University of Maryland and Katherine Wells of Prince Frederick attends Shenandoah University.

Two students are pursuing a radiography degree. Mary Crupi of Dowell attends Prince George’s Community College and Charity Langley of Mechanicsville attends the University of Notre Dame. Rebecca Robles of Prince Frederick is studying sonography at New York University and Samantha Cobaugh of Port Republic is pursuing a degree in nuclear medicine at York College of Pennsylvania.
