This month visitors will notice a lot of new faces on the medical-surgical/pediatric unit at Calvert Memorial Hospital. They are part of the new pediatric hospitalist team at CMH. Their role is to provide round-the-clock coverage for sick children who are admitted.

The Calvert Memorial Hospital Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling $23,000 to 26 area college students for studies in allied health fields for the 2007 – 2008 academic year. They are pursuing degrees in nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiography, respiratory therapy, sonography and speech therapy.

Additionally, the foundation awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Kala Scoggin of Huntingtown who is training to become a physician’s assistant at Anne Arundel Community College. The Sharon’s Way Benevolent Fund established this scholarship last year.

“The scholarships are an effective way to meet the increasing demand for qualified healthcare professionals in our community,” said CMH President and CEO Jim Xinis.

Since the CMH scholarship program began in 1991, the foundation has given 201 scholarships totaling $239,500 to area students. The scholarship fund was created by an endowment from the Calvert-Arundel Medical Center. Donations to the CMH Annual Appeal can also be designated for scholarships.

Eighteen scholarships were given to nursing students. Six of the recipients attend the College of Southern Maryland. They are Shannon Cooper of Sunderland, Melanie Hovan and Cathleen Pirner of Huntingtown, Karen Murphy and Danielle Wilt of St. Leonard and Abigail Romero of Lusby.

Twelve nursing students attend area colleges. Amy Brzozowski of Glen Burnie and Jessica Jones attend Anne Arundel Community College. Chantel Ray of Huntingtown and Anastasia Wieroniey of Owings attend Towson State University. Meghan Bibeault of Millersville attends West Virginia University. Stacey Carrico of Prince Frederick attends Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Heather Holley of Owings attends Catholic University. Christopher McWhirt of St. Leonard attends Widener College. Meghan Newman of Chesapeake Beach attends East Carolina University. Lindsay Slavin attends the University of Maryland. Jessica Teague of Huntingtown attends Mount St. Mary’s University and Lauryn Trott of Huntingtown attends the University of North Carolina.

Three students are enrolled in a physical therapy program. Melissa McGinnis of Millersville and Shawn O’Neill of Tracy’s Landing attend the University of Maryland. Kara Fulginiti of Gambrills attends Towson University. She is also studying speech therapy. Kelly O’Steen of Dunkirk is studying speech therapy at LaSalle University.

Amanda Brickner of Prince Frederick is studying respiratory therapy at Salisbury University. Rosa Iannone of Huntingtown is pursuing a pharmacy degree at the University of Maryland. Rebecca Robles of Prince Frederick is studying sonography at New York University and Pamela Wood of Lusby is pursing a radiography degree at Prince George’s Community College.
