"Fishing for a Cure" tournament July 25
Angling for a great fishing trip? The July 25 charity tournament hosted by Bunky's Charter Boats in Solomons is a sure bet. Proceeds will benefit the planned expansion of the Infusion Therapy Center at Calvert Memorial Hospital.
The $75 fee ($30 is tax-deductible) includes some of the best bottom fishing the area has to offer, a box lunch and beverages for each participant. Bait and tackle are also provided. There will be prizes for the biggest fish and other contests.
"Fishing for a Cure" is co-sponsored by Capt. Robbie (Miss Regina), Capt. Gordie (Miss Bobbie) and Brian Elder (Teacher's Pet). These are experienced captains who know the waters around Solomons Island and the best places for spot, croaker and white perch.
So, if you're looking to snag the "big one" or just want to catch a nice mess of fish for dinner - sign up now for "Fishing for a Cure" at www.calverthospital.org. Pre-registration is required. Sponsorship packages are also available. For more details, call 410-474-2269 or email bunkyscharterboats@comcast.net.
Other local companies have climbed onboard to support the event, including BFC Countertops and Woodworking, Cumberland and Erly, Home PC Specialists and Professional Services. Additionally, Boomerangs Original Ribs is donating the food.
"I know the importance of the Infusion Center at Calvert Memorial and I'm happy to support their efforts for area cancer patients," said Bunky Conner, former president of the Solomons Charter Captains Association. In 2002, the group donated $3,490 to purchase televisions for the center's patients.
"We're so appreciative of all Bunky's efforts to raise funds for our Infusion Center," said Barbara Polak, vice president of clinical services at CMH.
Last year, the CMH Infusion Therapy Center treated 872 patients from Southern Maryland. This is up 135 percent from just three years ago. To meet this demand, the hospital is planning to renovate and expand the center this fall.
The six-month project will increase the number of treatment areas from eight to 14 and feature padded, comfortable reclining chairs with side tables. Some of the areas have curtains for patients who desire privacy. Others are open for those who want space for family and friends.
The new design incorporates skylights and natural colors to enhance the healing environment. Other elements like the two-toned wooden floors and curving lines add to the soothing and relaxing atmosphere.
A recent fishing party aboard Bunky's Marchelle proudly displays their catch.
