Prince Frederick, MD (May 20, 2008) - Mike Shaw, a physical therapist in rehabilitation services, was named by Calvert Memorial Hospital as Employee of the Year for 2007. Shaw, who joined CMH in 1997, is noted for sharing his clinical knowledge and wound care expertise.
"Mike is a dependable, reliable team player who always provides kind and caring service to our patients," said Kathy Moore, director of rehabilitation services. "He is an excellent resource for our staff on many different levels."
In addition to Shaw, the other CMH employees nominated for outstanding performance in 2007 were Carolyn Combs, RN, medical-surgical Level 2; Audrey Gross, shift leader, dietary services; Christina McComb, occupational therapist, rehabilitation services; Jessica Montgomery, accountant, finance department and Tomorra Rawlings, shift leader, dietary services.
Kasia Sweeney, director of public relations and marketing, won the hospital's Beacon Award, presented to the manager who exemplifies outstanding leadership skills. Sweeney, who joined CMH in 2001, was recognized for her outstanding communications skills and ability to empower others.
"Kasia's efforts during the past year have been exemplary," said CMH President and CEO Jim Xinis. "Her level of professionalism, meeting deadlines and quality of work are most admired by all levels in our organization."
Four other CMH managers were also nominated. They were Frank Daley, director of plant operations; Mark English, director of materials management; Lynne Pickering, director of education and training and Bobbie Vess, director of radiology.
The 33rd Annual Employee Awards ceremony celebrated many accomplishments during the past year. CMH employees were recognized for their years of service, for their attention to quality and their commitment to improving service.
"All of you are the heart of our rich history," said CMH President and CEO Jim Xinis. "Just as you have shaped what we are today, you will also define our future."
In all, the program honored 108 employees who contributed 1,325 years of service. Bob McWhirt, vice president for patient care and nursing, presented the customer service awards.
The behavioral health unit was honored as the best inpatient department for the second year in a row. Woman's Wellness was recognized as the best outpatient department. Special honors went to 14 departments or programs attaining a 75 percent or better rating in overall quality. These included Cardiac Catheterization, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Cardiopulmonary Services, Community Wellness, Diabetes Self-Management Program, Family Birth Center, Imaging Services, Infusion Therapy Center, Joint Replacement Program, Outpatient Department, Sleep Disorders Center, Social Work, Surgical Services and Twin Beaches Community Health Center.
"Your unwavering devotion to your patients and our community year after year has helped our hospital blossom into a place we can all feel very proud of," said Sally Showalter, vice chairman, board of directors.
The top service award went to Ardelia Nelson, dietary services, for 35 years with CMH. Five employees were recognized for 30 years of service. They were Barbara Bridgett, infection control; Harry Harrod, housekeeping; Dickie Smith, behavioral health; Madeline Wilkerson, medical-surgical Level 3 and Penny Younkers, laboratory.
Retirees Mary Ann Antoun, nursing, 13 years; Cecilia Devere, nursing, 16 years; Mary Emma Middleton, infusion therapy, five years; Judith Sturgis, infection control, 19 years and Mary Jane Wares, administrative secretary, nine years; were honored for their years of service.
