Disease Profile
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is not a new disease. It has been recognized for years as "hardening of the arteries" or atherosclerosis. It usually affects people as they age. Early detection and treatment will make the difference in quality of life. Lifestyle exacerbates the disease. People with a family history of vascular disease, high blood pressure or heart disease are especially at risk. But diabetes remains the leading condition associated with vascular disease. Peripheral vascular disease, for instance, leads to 100,000 amputations each year. Arterial disease develops when cholesterol or other deposits build up inside the artery walls and cause blockage. The arteries gradually narrow to the point where blood flow to the heart and extremities becomes insufficient.
At CMH we offer an array of treatment options from modifications in diet, exercise programs, and medication to vascular surgery. |
