WellScan heart scans use a state-of-the-art CT scanner and a specialized software application to measure the calcium in your arteries – which physicians believe can be a precursor to the plaque that causes heart disease.
Who can benefit from this type of screening?
You are someone who may benefit from a heart and lung scan if you:
- Are over 50 years of age
- State-of-the-art technology produces a 3D view inside the body.
- Have a family history of heart disease
- Have high cholesterol
- Use or have used tobacco in the past
- Struggle with obesity
- Have known heart disease and would like detailed information about the condition of your heart
- Have any known cancer site
What does this exam show that a normal chest x-ray would not?
- This exam uses state-of-the art CT technology to show an extremely clear 3-D picture of the heart and lungs.
- The images show calcium present in the vessels. Calcium buildup in the blood vessels can be a precursor for heart attacks. The calcium levels are scored by special software in the machine's computer. Your score will be reviewed by a board certified radiologist who will compare it to what is considered a normal score.
- The radiologist will sit down with you after your exam, explain your results and give you a copy to take home with you.
Do I need a physician's order?
- You do not need a referral from your doctor, however you will be asked to provide the name of your primary physician so a copy of your report can be sent to him/her.
What does this cost?
- The heart and lung screening is $250.00. Insurance does not cover the cost of this exam but payment plans are available.
