Before Your Surgery
Do not eat or drink anything, including water, gum or candy, after midnight the night before your surgery.

If you take medication routinely for any condition, ask your physician or the anesthesiologist whether to take it the day of surgery.

It is recommended that you refrain from smoking for at least 12 hours before and after your surgery.

Do not wear jewelry or bring other valuables with you to the hospital. Wedding rings may be left on and taped into place unless they are on an extremity that is having surgery.

Remove all nail polish before coming to the hospital. Wear minimal makeup. Do not wear contact lenses.

Remember to wear comfortable and loose clothing. Often after surgery, tight clothing will be uncomfortable and make it difficult to get dressed.

You are required to have a responsible adult drive you home from the hospital upon discharge. It is recommended that person wait with you at the hospital until you are ready for discharge. A parent or guardian must accompany a minor.

Make arrangements for your care at home. Case Managers are available to help you locate resources if needed.
